Vostok Station, Antarctica

It is 800 miles from the South Pole in the dead center of the East Antarctic Plateau, based on the article in Treehugger. Around 25 to 30 people reside here during the continent’s summer months and only a dozen who are so brave enough stay here during the winter season.

The lowest recorded temperature in Vostok Station is minus 128.6 but it could be colder. Studies suggested that temperatures on the ice sheet can reach minus 144.

Verkhoyansk, Russia

1,311 people live in Verkhoyansk, Russia, based on a 2010 census. This place is located deep in the Siberian wilderness and is 1,500 miles south of the North Pole. Between the 1860s and early 20th century, it became the place for political exiles. It was recorded that during its coldest month, January, a minus 44 temperature can be felt. However, its official all-time low was minus 90.

Oymyakon, Russia

Oymyakon recorded its lowest-ever temperature of minus 90 degrees on February 6, 1933. It is located 390 miles away in northeast Russia. 462 people were residing there, based on a 2010 census. Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk tied for the Guinness World Record for the lowest temperature in an inhabited place in the Northern Hemisphere.

Yakutsk, Russia

The lowest temperature ever recorded in Yakutsk was minus 83.9 and that was on February 5, 1891. An estimated more than 300,000 people call this place their home. Most of them are in the region’s mining industry. Although this place is so cold for many people, it also has theaters, museums, and a zoo.
