Most Dangerous Countries To Visit In 2023

These are the most dangerous countries in the world and the reasons why.

We all love traveling but as much as possible it would be best to avoid these places at extreme risk or considered the most dangerous countries in the world.

Traveling is not just about pleasure. It is also one way of experiencing different cultures and stories. Through going to various places, we also get to gain knowledge about many things from people to languages and beliefs.

When it comes to traveling where should we draw our boundaries?

Perhaps, a line of boundaries must be drawn if a certain place will put our life and safety at risk. There would be no fun in a place where situations and people pose threats. Knowing the dangers associated is essential when making decisions and cost-benefit analyses whatever reason your travel is for – may it be for leisure, adventure, or business travel.

When it comes to how safe and dangerous it is in a country, Economics and Peace releases its Global Peace Index report annually. This report measures the safety and danger of a country based on 23 different indicators and among them are political terror, deaths from internal conflict, and killing rate.

The GPI includes 163 countries of the world in their evaluation, the figure that accounts for more than 99.7% of the world’s total population which is now at over 8 billion. Safety and Security, Ongoing Conflict, and Militarization are the areas where these countries are being analyzed.

A score will then be calculated and the higher the score is, the more dangerous the country is.

Here are the 2022 GPI scores that determined which countries are not safe to travel to:

  • Afghanistan — 3.554
It actually has a score of 3.631 in 2021. Despite the decrease, it still topped the list for the fifth consecutive year now. This is a war-torn country and the list of death from war is higher compared to the figures of other countries.
  • Yemen — 3.394
United Nations has listed this country as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. There’s an ongoing military conflict that has been running for five years now. 80 percent of the population desperately needs humanitarian assistance.
  • Syria — 3.356
Factors like ongoing conflict, civil unrest, and widespread violent crime such as robberies, assaults, carjacking, and kidnappings all contributed to the 3.356 score of Syria.
  • Russia — 3.275
The GPI score was only recorded at the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian War and there’s a possibility that it will go higher, meaning it will be more dangerous, reflected in the 2023 report.
  • South Sudan — 3.184
There are high levels of internal conflict, however, some improvements were noted. There’s a 15% reduction in terms of deaths from internal conflict and overall homicide rate.
  • DR Congo — 3.166
It is among the top countries determined under the category of “deaths from external conflict”. Doing crimes are common and the top problems include poverty and political unrest. Apart from these factors, natural disasters are also a major concern.
  • Iraq — 3.157
Gaining this high score is due to both internal and external conflicts. Terrorist attack is also a major problem like the troubles caused by the ISIS group which continues with their violent activities like capturing and killing both civilians and Iraqi armed forces members.
