Pride Month: What The Flag Colors Represent

The flag of Pride Month features the rainbow colors

Pride Month – Here are the meanings behind the colors featured in the flag representing the LGBTQ+ community.

The month of June has become the time of the year that the LGBTQ+ community is celebrating and this shows inclusivity. With this celebration, it is common to see rainbow-themed flag. It is also called the Pride Flag or Rainbow Flag.

This object that has become a symbol of Pride Month was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978. He created a custom-made, eight-striped rainbow banner, based on the article in Mental Floss. This has become a symbol of liberation and hope for queer people around the world.

Every color represents one thing the community is advocating. The color pink represents s=xuality while red represents life and vitality. Healing is the meaning of orange while yellow stands for the radiance and brightness of the sun. Green is the color of nature while turquoise is the symbol of magic and art.

Indigo is for serenity and calmness while the meaning behind the color violet stands for spirit. This flag immediately became a hit and it eventually became scarce. Not long after since it was first released, the color pink was excluded because it was difficult to find a fabric with the exact color. Then, the turquoise was removed and this made the flag more symmetrical.

With this, the Pride Flag with six colors is being used today. From the original design made by Baker, the flag undergoes evolution to incorporate inclusivity.

Daniel Quasar created the Progress Pride Flag in 2018. This included five new colored stripes in the shape of an arrow pointing to the right, illustrating forward movement. The black and brown stripes represent queer people of color while black is a symbol for individuals living with HIV/AIDS and those who passed away because of this disease.

Then, the light blue, pink, and white shades are for the celebration of transgender and nonbinary communities. This was an ode to the transgender flag that Monica Helms created in 1999.
