Word Of The Year: Dictionaries Choose Their Words For 2023

Here is the word of the year chosen by different dictionaries

Word Of The Year – For 2023, dictionaries showcased the words they have chosen to represent this year or define what has transpired.

Every year, different words are being highlighted by dictionaries as the “word” they have chosen. Based on the article in Reader’s Digest, here are the words regarded as the winners of this annual title.

Cambridge Dictionary chose the word “hallucinate” for 2023. Many might be wondering why this was chosen as it was a quite common word. The word means, “to seem to see, hear, feel or smell something that does not exist, usually because of a health condition or because you have taken a drug.”

However, this year, “hallucinate” gained a new meaning and this is attributed to AI or “artificial intelligence.” Cambridge explained that “hallucinating” can happen “when an artificial intelligence (= a computer system that has some of the qualities that the human brain has, such as the ability to produce language in a way that seems human) hallucinates, it produces false information.” It simply means that it is a made-up fact or misinformation and with this, people need to be more discerning of what they see, hear, or read, especially online.

For the Collins Dictionary, the AI is the word for this year. The dictionary chose this word or abbreviation because it is “considered to be the next great technological revolution,” “has seen rapid development” and “has been much talked about in 2023.”

As of writing, other dictionaries like Merriam Webster and Oxford haven’t released yet their words for this year. However, in 2020, Merriam Webster’s chosen word was “gaslighting” which means “the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one’s own advantage.”

For the Oxford Dictionary, it was the word “goblin mode” and this means “a slang term, often used in the expressions ‘in goblin mode’ or ‘to go goblin mode’ – is ‘a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.”
