Dog With Red Collar: What’s The Meaning Behind This?

What is the reason behind a dog with red collar?

Dog With Red Collar – Have you ever wondered why some dogs have red collars and what could be the reason behind this?

It is easy for animal lovers, especially dog lovers, to appreciate a dog they see and sometimes they would even pet it. There is a certain connection between them. However, there are certain moments that might make you think twice before going near a dog.

One situation is when a dog is wearing a red collar or scarf/bandana. Based on the article in Reader’s Digest, red is universally used as a sign for “stop.” Stop signs and stop lights use this color.

People are also using this color when talking about “red flags.” This color makes us stop and be cautious. The same reason goes when you see a dog with a red collar.

Dr. Brian Evans, veterinarian and medical director of the virtual vet care company Dutch, said that red is the signal that the dog or any pet is aggressive and this means that they need space from people and other animals as well.

These are pets that have been known to snap or bite at passersby, attack other dogs, or lunge at people. These pets may be perfectly fine at home with their owner but become overly protective of them when they are out,” Dr. Evans explained.

In some instances, the red dog collars might also be worn by service or working dogs. This means that they shouldn’t be pet.

On the other hand, the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) also uses the red dog collar but it is intended to “warn others to give the dog distance, yet allows the person and dog to participate in relative safety,” Amy Shojai, a certified animal behavior consultant, explained.

Not all instances that you see a dog with a red collar mean danger but it is advisable to practice precaution. “It is not advised to attempt to ‘win over’ these animals,” Dr. Evans said. He also said that it is better to avoid asking to pet the dog to avoid uncomfortable interactions between you and the dog owner.
