Used Coffee Grounds – Don’t throw away the coffee grounds that you have already used because there are still ways you can make the most out of them.

Add to your compost pile

Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen which is a key component of a healthy compost pile, based on the article in Reader’s Digest. Chia-Ming Ro, garden consultant and owner of Coastal Homestead in Los Angeles, said that they help balance out the carbon-rich materials in compost, such as leaves and paper.

Use as an insect repellent

Ro said that there is some evidence suggesting that coffee grounds can repel certain insects, such as slugs, ants, and mosquitoes. The exact mechanism of how the coffee powder repels insects is not well understood but may be because of its strong scent that hides the scents of the plants and makes it less attractive to insects.

Make flowers bloom

Since coffee is a source of nitrogen, it is beneficial to flowers because it contains essential nutrients for plant growth. However, before adding coffee powder to your garden you should look into which flowers may benefit. Used coffee grounds may change the soil composition.

For beauty routine

Coffee powder contains caffeine and this has shown its benefits in dealing with cellulite. Stacy Savage, founder & CEO of Zero Waste Strategies said, “Some people believe that the caffeine in coffee powder may help reduce the appearance of cellulite when applied topically.”

It is also believed that coffee powder can help in exfoliating and keep skin glowing and healthy. Additionally, caffeine in coffee powder can help stimulate blood flow. “Coffee grounds can be used as a hair mask to potentially stimulate hair growth and add shine,” Savage said.

Coffee powder are also known to be high in antioxidants which can fight free radicals and are also beneficial for the skin. Because of this, some people use coffee powder as an eye mask to reduce puffiness and dark circles.
